Biology freshman Molly Leadbeater uses “pink and girly” decorative touches and meticulous organization in her room, but safely entering and exiting her elevated bed took a little practice.

Biology freshman Molly Leadbeater uses organization and feminine colors to make her room fit her personality.

How have you made this space work for you?

Before I even saw my room, I got the room dimensions, measured everything I was going to bring, everything that was in here and then I put it on graph paper. I definitely planned everything out.

How long did it take you to set it up?

We moved everything into my room in about two hours. What took the longest was putting away clothes and shoes— all the girly stuff. To this day, I’ll find different things that I need, like more drawers or storage space.

What did you bring specifically for your room?

I wanted a futon below my bed to make a place for friends to sit and hang out. It’s also useful if someone wants to come visit or spend the night.

I wanted a room that reflected “fun, classy, neat and organized,” and I felt like a lot of the stuff I bought accomplished that.

What’s your favorite thing?

My favorite thing is probably my futon because it’s eye-catching — everyone looks at it when they walk in. It’s hard having my bed elevated so high because I have to deal with the ladder at night and in the mornings, but it’s worth it.

I don’t usually have problems with the ladder, but when we had the snow day I got really excited and got caught in the ladder. I bruised my legs on the way down — you can’t get out of this bed fast.

I’ve never had a bunk bed or an elevated bed, so the first night I was here, my mom warned me to pull out my futon just in case I fell — which was lucky, because I did fall. I landed on the futon, but it still scared me. It hasn’t happened since then, but I don’t sleep very heavily because I’m a little paranoid now.

I don’t like it when people come in and plop down on my bed and pillow, so it’s nice because no one wants to climb up there.

How much time do you spend in your room?

I spend most of the day in my room. I don’t just sleep in here, I hang out in here a lot. My friends will come over to talk, and we’ll watch movies or do stuff.

What do people say when they first see your room?

A lot of them say “it’s so you,” with the pink and girly. Other people say it’s so clean and organized. A lot of people call my room “the Target room,” because they say it looks like a room from a commercial. That makes sense, because I got most of my stuff there. I love Target.

I have pictures, and I have knick-knacks, but it’s not overwhelming.

How can students make their rooms more personal?

Definitely make it like you. Give yourself fun things to look at and make yourself comfortable.

Also, don’t overdo it, because you need that space to sleep and study — you don’t want the room to be too distracting.

My room at home has similar colors: pink, black and white.

Plus, I felt like black and white stuff can be useful as I get older, but maybe switch out the pink for a more mature color.
